US tops group A of Olympic qualifying after stoppage time penalty thriller

For those who might’ve missed it, that was one phenomenal game for the US Under-23 men’s soccer team that is attempting to qualify for the Olympics in China. They were tied going into stoppage time, and a tie by Honduras would give them first place in the group. The U.S. went into the game two points behind and needing the win to assure first place in the group. A place in the semifinals were already guaranteed before the start of the game. The U.S. was pressing but the Honduras smartly bunkered by putting most of their players behind the ball and playing for the tie.

Once the 90th minute was reached the official put up a number “5” on the board, meaning five extra minutes would be added. In the 94th minute, forward Charlie Davies took the ball into the penalty area but was sandwiched by two Honduran players. I mean, he was laid out. The penalty was awarded (rightly) and Eddie Gaven went right, the Honduran keeper wen to Gaven’s left and the U.S. celebrated. What a game! Go USA!

It’s yet undetermined who we’ll face as Group B will finish up it’s group stage tomorrow. We’ll likely face Mexico, Canada, or Haiti, however.

I’ll have to try to catch highlights sounded like one hell of a game.
