One Favre to Live

If the title reminds you of a famous soap opera that you’ve heard of but never watched, then you see where I’m going with this. Time and time again, we’re reminded about how much drama there is in sports. So much in fact that (thankfully) there doesn’t need to be a reality show about it.

Who needs a reality show when you have Brett Favre and the Packers? Featuring Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy as the evil co-conspirators this is some the the juiciest stuff since A-Rod and Madonna. Wait, isn’t that still going on?

Who decides to break their silence on returning to the league on some channel that no sports fan watches? Fox News Channel? Never seen it before. Toss it into the same pile as other unwatchables such as CNN!

So Favre not only decides to come back but piss off uber-sports giant ESPN in the process. How pissed must they be that they have to credit Fox News every time a Favre report comes in? I can see it now, Chris Mortensen and Jack Bauer teaming up to espionage on the Favre property, ranch, farm, or whatever barn he spends his time at in hopes of being Greta to the punch and landing an exclusive.

Then you have Mike McCarthy playing the role of the pear shaped loser. Mike Sherman previously played the role, was fired, and now they’ve brought aboard someone of similar ilk. The pear shaped loser’s job is to contradict every thing that Favre says when in time of crisis. All the while, you must act surprised and aloof as if you had no idea what was going on the whole time.

So this leaves Ted Thomspon, the man behind the curtain. In reality, very few know of this person other than the name. He’s akin to Dr. Claw, the evildoer from Inspector Gadget who sits behind the scenes and calls all the shots. If a smidgen of what Favre said to Greta was true (and I believe Favre) then Thompson appears as the guy that turned this relationship sour.

Perhaps Thompson consulted with the 49ers on how to kick legends out the back door? Off the top of my head, I seem to remember this happening to: Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, and Ronnie Lott.

Whatever the case may be this current situation stinks and I really don’t see a happy ending to this…and like the sands of a hourglass, these are the Days of our Favres!

drama indeed something’s got to give, but this has it all: the player who just won’t retire, the evil managment, the passionate fans of Green Bay. Sit back and watch, this is sports opera at it’s best.
