Watch out for the Wizards

Sorry MLS fans, I’m not talking about the Kansas City Wizards. I’m talking about none other than DC’s own Washington Wizards. The Wiz are the one team in the East that’s going to throw everyone for a loop come playoff time.

They’ll battle King James and the Cavs in the first round and as much as I’d like to see LBJ beat them down 3 years in a row, I think that Jamison and Co. are ready to dethrone the King. That’s right, I said Antawn Jamison. Sorry Agent Zero this isn’t your team anymore. At least not this year! In any event, the Cavaliers look tired and aren’t playing with any sense of urgency. They may have traded for bigger names but certainly not bigger hearts. The Cavs look flat and are in trouble.

Let’s say I’m right and the Wizards get to the 2nd round. According to my back of the napkin calculations, they’ll be going against the Celtics. Remember early in the year when Boston was on pace for 75 wins and the Wizards beat them 2 games in a row? Sure that was 6 months ago but the fact remains that the Wiz matchup with the Celtics pretty well. I’m not going to do something stupid and guarantee that the Wizards beat the Celtics but they definitely can make the series interesting over 6 or 7 games.

The wild card in the Wizards’ playoff success will be none other than Gilbert Arenas. If he can keep his ego in check and continue to come off the bench then the Wiz are going to be very dangerous. The only thing that could hurt them right now is overconfidence. If Gilbert thinks he’s 110% and insists on starting then Eddie Jordan will probably acquiesce to this.

My advice to Arenas, compliments of The Rock: know your role and shut your mouth!

re: First off, I doubt anybody would have thought this was about the KC Wizards haha. Secondly, shouldn’t it be Caron butler and co.? Antawn’s been healthier but Caron has gone insane this year. He’s a better defender and a better all-around offensive player. Antawn is great off the ball, it’s always been his strength, but this is Caron’s team.

Asking Arenas to shut his mouth is like asking a five year old to stop eating sweets, it’s impossible. Arenas is a great shooter, that’s about it. Great shooters are generally only successful as high profile role players. Michael Redd had help in Milwaukee and Ray Allen had Rashard Lewis, pure shooters are note versatile enough to carry the load by themselves. Caron and Antawn are much more complete players and as long as Arenas keeps his ego in check (don’t count on it) they can make some noise.

However, the noise they’ll be making is in the East. They would get murdered by the Celtics and any Eastern team outside of Detroit has little to no chance at forcing a 6-7 game series with Boston.
