It’s great to see Yahoo constantly improving their fantasy football product every year. Fortunately, there’s a lot of competition so Yahoo is forced to up the ante every year. It’d be nice if football video games were the same way as EA Sports is a good counter-example to what happens when there’s no competition.
I just wrapped up my 5th Yahoo draft and this latest one was by far the most complicated. Here’s some of the interesting quirks we’re dealing with:
- Keeper league: 4 returning players
- Custom draft order: no snake, multiple picks per round, etc.
- QB/WR/RB flex position: I’m still unsure how they pulled this off but it works
- Advanced scoring system with bonus points for yardages
It may not be that complicated to you but this is by far the most confusing of the leagues I’ve ever been in. Fortunately, Yahoo made massive improvements to their game and is now able to accommodate our league’s settings.
In previous years our draft had to be offline and we all shared a Google docs session in which one person would cross off names on the spreadsheet. It was ridiculously slow and took 5 hours over 2 evenings.
We just completed this year’s draft in a little over an hour and everything is good to go. Props to Yahoo for thinking forward like this and keeping fantasy football fun by not making it a pain in the ass to manage the league!

pretty awesome. Yahoo definitely knows what they are doing. they run the best fantasy leagues, by far. nothing else even comes close.
Great stuff on Yahoo, but I don’t think they’ve necessarily closed the door on competition. Someone just needs to do what they do best, solve some of the tech issues on Yahoo, then market appropriately and voila! we have a viable alternative.

Great point about Madden. They never feel the need to improve their game because there’s no competition. Dynasty mode has been the same since Madden 2004.

Actually Madden 2009 is a big upgrade over 2007 and 2008.
