This was a thought I was telling myself when the rumors first hit that the Warriors were going to try and bring Chris Webber back to the Bay Area. And it’s the same thing I’m thinking now that Webber announced his retirement from the game yesterday. This is the same Chris Webber who left Golden State on bad terms. The same Chris Webber who was now a shadow of his former glory days due to injuries. And it was the same coach Don Nelson that had some serious difficulties with Webber that caused Webber to leave that wanted him back this past January?
It just doesn’t make sense, folks. Webber was saying all the right things earlier this year about how he was looking forward to coming back to play for the Warriors. Nelson was talking the talk about how he’s past the problems they had before and was welcoming back Webber with open arms.
Am I missing something here? He was injured before coming to Golden State this year, so I don’t believe that the injury he suffered to his knee was the final blow to his hopes of playing again. The Golden State management and Nelson either did not think his injuries were that severe before (they were) or were making a move just to make a move this offseason. A healthy Webber would not have even helped the Warriors much. He’s old, slow and would not (and wasn’t able to) keep up with the run-and-gun style the Warriors play.
It makes the Warriors management, the team, and the fans look bad. He took a spot that could have gone to young players like Patrick O’Bryant. Now the team has to promote O’Bryant or try to get another veteran in the final month of the season. The Webber move ended up retarding the development of players like O’Bryant and hurt the team’s chemistry and playoff push. Shame on you, Nellie and Chris Mullin. You should have known Webber was worthless!
why was Nelson hyping up Webber so much? I distinctly remember Nellie saying he’d thought C-Webb would eventually play 25-30 mins a night! are you kidding me? based on what? unless Webber was dipping in Balco 2.0’s cookie jar I don’t see how he could have concluded something like that. Brendan Wright should have been getting these minutes all year long! -bB
