Fantasy Football: Rookie Running Backs to Consider Drafting

Alright, I have to admit it. I’m a big fan of running backs and the position itself. Regardless of what’s been happening the last couple years with the move towards more running back by committees (RBBCs) and a greater emphasis on the passing game (e.g. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady), running backs are still gold in the fantasy football game. You need a couple good runners to make it to the playoffs and help you win championships.

That’s why I’m excited about the new crop of running backs about to join the league. I’ll profile some of the backs I think will be worth spending an early to mid draft pick for in your 2008 fantasy football drafts.

Darren McFadden, Oakland Raiders: There’s no disputing his talent and speed, but is he durable and able to move side-to-side to make defenders miss? He may be a bit of a one-trick pony, in other words. I don’t doubt Justin Fargas will be the primary ball carrier, but McFadden is probably good for about 10 touches a game and he’s got that homerun ability if the O-line can create the holes for him to run through. I would not be surprised if some owners take him early (4th-5th round) but I don’t think he should be considered until at least the 6th or 7th round of most drafts.

Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers: The Panthers aren’t sold on DeAngelo Williams and Stewart, despite a foot problem, should enter camp completely healthy. This is a guy that can end up taking the starting role by the reigns this year. He’s a big, bruising back but he can also catch the ball. He’s a little bit of a risk given his injury status and who knows if he can carry the load in the NFL, but I’d take a gamble on him around round 5 or 6.

Matt Forte, Chicago Bears: I’m beginning to like this guy more and more following the off-field troubles of Cedric Benson. Let’s face it, Benson has been a moderate to big disappointment for the Bears. There’s nothing spectacular about Forte, but he’s solid and he may have the opportunity since Benson is just blowing it right now. I’d happily take Forte before Benson in any draft just based on his upside and the situation in Chicago.

Kevin Smith, Detroit Lions: See Matt Forte. But seriously, I like his chances of playing time versus Tatum Bell and Artose Pinner.

I’d also like to list guys that are in committees that could surprise: Felix Jones(DAL), Chris Johnson(TEN), Rashard Mendenhall(PIT), and Ray Rice(BAL).

McFadden The money that they are going to invest in McFadden and with the hype he brings to Raiders camp, I don’t see Fargas getting more carries than him. Al Davis will kill if McFadden doesn’t become the star he is projected to be.

Mcfadden we’ll see. I just don’t see McFadden as the every down back, more like the thunder to Fargas’ lightning. He’s more of a change of pace back than an every down guy, despite the hype and money paid.

lateral movement McFadden is primarily a north-south runner, he doesn’t have the quick lateral movement to make the cut and make defenders miss – at least yet. It’ll be interesting to see how he does in camp though.

40 This isn’t a joke! I’m planning to draft 40 in the 4th round! Am I crazy to even think about this? I like to gamble a lot.
