The Circus in Green Bay in Full Effect

A long meeting on Sunday night with coach Mike McCarthy. A scheduled press conference yesterday that was rescheduled for sometime today. And now, we believe Brett Favre will practice sometime today. It’s a circus indeed in Green Bay. But still, there’s no sign of any quick resolution to the drama that has unfolded and consumed the Green Bay Packers almost this entire offseason.

“There have been no promises,” McCarthy said Sunday night. “Once again, there has been indecision throughout Brett’s path back here to Green Bay. It’s important for us to sit down and communicate. There are some things we need to go through.”

That’s just code word for we don’t know what the hell we’re going to do here and we need to buy more time.

We also know that NFL Commish Roger Goodell reinstated Favre and also found that there was no tampering on the part of the Minnesota Vikings. It just seems that every opportunity there has been to end this issue, has been bypassed and the drama allowed to continue.

And what about Aaron Rodgers? You have to feel for the guy. This is what he said a couple of days ago: “I know if they do open it up to competition, not a lot of people give me a chance, but I believe in myself and I’m going to be the best I can be and let coach decide from there.” Spoken very diplomatically, but you have to think he’s upset, disappointed, angry, or answer choice D: all the above. And could you blame him? I can’t.

Adding an additional twist to all of this is the Packers hiring former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, who has now gotten himself in the business of sports press relations of all things. Yes, things have become that dire.

All of this would be funny if it wasn’t true. And ongoing. Unlike a typical controversy, this thing is not just a two-sided debate, it’s multi-faceted with several parties in play: Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Roger Goodell, the Packers and of course, the fans. You just couldn’t write a better made-for-tv script than this one, folks!
