I know it’s been a while, but here’s my latest:
I know we’re in the heart of baseball season, but I have a little football to talk about. As a book person, there is an expectation that I will always have a book ready for recommendation. Not a bad thing to have in life, since I think everyone should read (something-and I don’t mean reading stuff online). It’s hard to talk about books on here, since I read mostly fiction. Most people who know me well are surprised to find out that I don’t read many sports books. I haven’t found a lot that I consider great. But I just finished a book by Mark Bowden (he wrote “Black Hawk Down”) called “The Best Game Ever”.
This book is about the 1958 NFL Championship game between the Colts and Giants that ushered in the NFL as the great league it is now. We all know how this story ends and that takes nothing away from the book. The stories about the players, and the era were just fascinating to read about. Considering Father’s Day is just around the corner, I suggest this book as a present for Dad. If you’re a fan of the NFL or sports in general, you must get this book! It’s not a huge book, it’s an easy read and you can take it on the subway, the pool or the beach. It will be worth your time!
I know I weighed in on this topic to some degree back in February, but I felt should be re-visited: Was the 1958 NFL Championship game the greatest game ever played? For me, as a 38 year old, I can’t answer because I never saw the game. But for the historical nature, I would have to say so. And I think it measures up to any other sport’s great games or series. Maybe this can be debated in other article. Feel free to comment….
re: It’s impossible to definitively declare one game the greatest game ever because it’s completely subjective. I think this past superbowl should be up their in the top 10 greatest game splayed, but I’m sure NFL historians would disagree with me on that.
Which game was it that had the Immaculate Reception? That’s gotta be up there.
