The Big Tuna Now to Lead the Big Fish Down in South Florida

As of early yesterday evening, Yahoo sports, ESPN and the Miami Herald all reported that Bill Parcells was in line to sign a four year contract to become the new VP of football operations with the Miami Dolphins. As a fan of the NFL and all the sub plots that entail it; here is why I think this is both a great move for the Dolphins and Mr. Parcells himself:

1) Let’s face it, Bill Parcells isn’t exaclty a “spring chicken” anymore. At sixty-six years old, what better place for Bill Parcells to spend the twightlight of his life where most elderly people his age normally do—-South Florida? In the basking glow of Miami’s palm trees, cool breeze and warm weather, being a high level front office executive in a place like Lambeau field, Seattle or Orchard Park doesn’t even generate a nanosecond of consideration in his mind. If the location itself isn’t ideal….nothing is.

2) Cam Cameron hasn’t done much in his first full year as head coach to earn any accolades or credit in his player picking decisions to warrant hanging around any longer as a Dolphin head coach. Wasting his first round draft pick on an over-hyped receiver when he had a chance to draft a solid young QB in Brady Quinn did not gain him alot of respect around the league. That and the trading of Chris Chambers for for a low 2nd round pick has many in Miami questioning just how prudent it was to hire the former Indiana Hoosier head coach. True the injury bug hit Miami hard this year with the loss of A.J. Feely and star RB Ronnie Brown ealry in the season, but with Bill Parcells, player mismanagement and poor draft picks won’t be much of an issue as it was last year. Expect Parcells to use his scouting knowledge to either select Brohm or McFadden with the #1 overall pick, or shrewdly trade down to possibly acquire to low #1 picks with some other franchise. Either way, I can’t see the blunder that occured in last year’s draft happening again if Parcells is calling the shots.

3) It almost seems straight out of an episode of Star Wars, where the teacher grooms the gifted pupil, only to have the pupil grow to be even more powerful and successful then the teacher himself and unleash havoc and fury on his former mentor. Such is the case with Bill Parcells and his former student, the three time SB winning coach and head of the most potent football team in the NFL since the 1999 St. Louis Rams, Mr. Bill Belichik. I am pretty sure Parcells hasn’t forgotten what his former defensive coordinator did to him in 2000 when after having signed a contract to take over as the Jets head coach after Parcells stepped down in 1999, Belichik instead decided to resign only to later take a job as head coach of the New England Patriots before the start of the 2000 season. Pulling a move like that is something only Bill Parcells himself could have orchestrated. Also remember, before that time, Parcells had never had much success as a head coach unless Belichick was somewhere alongside him, however Belichick has since gone on to show that he didn’t need the Tuna to become on of the greatest NFL coaches of all time. You think that doesn’t bother Bill Parcells just a little?

I’m thinking the chance to play Belichick’s “evil empire” and show the world, once and for all, that the teacher is truly supreme over his pupil is more than enough motive for Bill Parcells to get back to “calling the shots” with an AFC east rival franchise. And, of course, Parcells’ track record speaks for itself. Every franchise he has taken over for as a head coach or upper office man, he has turned around on a dime. From the early 1980 New York Giants, to the present day Dallas Cowboys team currently sitting pretty atop the NFC at 12-2, Parcells has somehow had his hand in influencing the way these football teams perform positively. This “Midas touch” can only be inspiring for a team that doesn’t expect much more than to win maybe one more game at best all season.

So to all who criticize Bill Parcells for his last minute backing out of the Atlanta Falcon executive management position…..I say….stay tuned because the best of the NFL soap opera and mini -drama is yet to come.

Parcells the right guy Parcells is the right guy to right that ship in Miami. Despite them winning their first game of the year, this team needs changes throughout the organization, not just the front office. The Dolphins should address some issues in the offseason such as firing Cameron and making some changes to their roster with the draft and free agency. No one person can effect the type of overhaul that’s needed in Miami, but hiring Parcells is a good start.

If He Leads They Will Come Parcells’ name power alone should attract a lot of solid free agents to come play for the Miami Dolphins. He should have no problem finding decent QB’s, WR’s, DB’s and a TE through free agancy or the draft.

did a little research Parcells doesn’t have any front office experience! I hope he knows (and by extension the Dolphins) what they’re getting into.
