On July 19, UFC Fight Night Anderson Silva put on another impressive display of his technical striking ability. Silva is a surgeon. It only took a minute to end Saturday night’s fight against light heavyweight contender James Irvin. I’m a big fan of the Sandman, especially since he is a local fighter with Sacramento roots. Apart from that though I did not expect the fight to go that long. With Silva it is only a matter of time before he capitalizes on an opponents mistake. In order to be successful against Silva, one must be “awake”. The Spider will take advantage of any slip, and move in with some nasty strikes. James Irving threw a kick to the body which Silva caught and followed with a right hand. A basic muay thai counter executed with extreme precision. I don’t know what is in store for Silva next. I see him waltzing through the light heavyweight division if he chooses, however I think the most challenging fights for him would be if he moved down in weight to face Rush or the Prodigy. Silva looks to be unstoppable, I have been a fan since his PRIDE days however I don’t really see much competition for him in the UFC middleweight division. Bisping looks to be on the horizon, however I hope Dana White looks to sign American Top Team phenom Denis Kang to challenge Silva for the title. I dont think Silva will fight the Ax Murderer because they used to be teammates at Chute Box in Brazil. Rampage Jackson or Griffin would suffer the same fate as Irvin, it might last a little longer however they both will end up on their backs.
Let’s turn now to the Affliction event. Fedor demolishes Tim Sylvia as expected. I am excited now to see Fedor fight Captain America. I think if anyone has a chance against the indomitable Russian it’s the Natural. Couture has finally broken ties with the UFC and he is now able to fight the best in the world. Despite Fedor’s inactivity he is still top 5 in the world. Watching him fight is much along the lines of watching Silva, one feels it is only a matter of time before he capitalizes on an opponent’s mistake. I am excited for future events in this promotion, I am becoming increasing disillusioned with the UFC and its WWF -like promotion.
amazing fighter overstated, but he is indeed the best pound for pound fighter in the world. I’d love to see Denis Kang come to UFC. I hear that Silva won’t fight much in the light heavy’s because he might have to face good friend Lyoto Machida and he’s said he won’t fight him. I think “surgeon” is a better nickname than “spider”. He is just so surgical with his strikes and his timing is impeccable.
