U.S. defender Jonathan Spector will have surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip and will be sidelined three to six months, causing him to miss the Beijing Olympics.
In addition, forward Landon Donovan will miss the Americans’ exhibition game against Spain on Wednesday night because of a tight groin, again delaying his 100th international appearance.
US will lose again. Questions are, can they put up a better fight? Can they be more of a threat offensively? Shoot, can they keep much possession? Finally, can they keep the scoreline close? Fernando Torres is one of the most feared strikers in the world. Spain, despite getting ready for Euro (e.g. they don’t want any injuries) presents a much different challenge than the Brits did last week.

Freddie… To answer your questions…
“Can they put up a better fight?” – I seriously doubt it considering Spain is unbeaten in their last 15 games. Coming off wins against France and Italy this year, Spain is a much tougher opponent than England.
“Can they be more of a threat offensively?” – Not sure. With your boy Donovan out, they’re lacking experience up top.
“Can they keep much possession?” – Not a chance. Spain will dominate possession. I’m predicting at least 60/40 in the possession category in favor of Spain.
I heard Aragones will try out a few defenders in hopes of solidifying the starting back line for Spain. Old man Puyol’s starting spot for Euro 2008 is up for grabs. Navarro and Albiol are candidates to steal a spot in the back four.
Torres is still nursing a slight ankle injury. He may get some minutes in there in preparation for the weekend.
Will be a fun match to watch. Is it going to be televised? I can’t find it anywhere.
