Derek Jeter was voted the most overrated player in baseball in a Sports Illustrated poll of over 495 major leaguers. Not surprisingly, both the Yankees captain and his manager could not care less.

LOL this poll pretty much confirms what we all (those outside of NYC) knew already. Thanks for the good laugh, SI!

Mark Ellis has comparable numbers to Jeter and they’re both middle infielders..but Mark Ellis doesn’t have over 13 million all star votes!!! what a joke.

This Poll is Total Nonesense All it shows is that MLB ballplayers don’t have any clue of what their fellow ballplayers are doing or are about.

First of all, Mark Ellis isn’t even in the same stratosphere as Derek Jeter…so the only thing funny is RowdyBurn’s last comment. Check out Jeter’s resume and then try comparing Mark Ellis to him.

What a joke.

Second of all, A-Rod was voted third on this list. A-Rod overrated? That’s like calling Willie Mays or Mickey Mantle overrated. He is the best (non-steroid) hitting player in the last 40 years!

Gimmie a break.

Third, if these so called “professionals” were even half as smart as regular fans are, how can Andruw Jones not be on this list?

All this list shows is how jealous ballplayers can be of their fellow peers. Truly pathetic.

Sorry to say, but in my honest opinion, Jeter is in no form overrated as a baseball player. Sure, he was at one point a celebrity figure and being a Yankee, it got him some popularity. But 2400 hits at this point in his career, he’s on pace to get 3,000 hits before its all said and done. 3,000 hits warrants a hall of famer. He’s also scored at least 100 runs almost every season in his career, and averages 150 games a year, which for a shortstop is tough considering how injury prone of a position that can be. Also, a career .300 hitter and career OBP of .380 is darn impressive for a non power hitter. Not to mention his playoff production and his will to win (diving head first into the seats to make a catch in foul territory in the 2004 playoffs). Interesting poll though, since the other players who were considered overrated included A-Rod and David Wright, both players who also consistently produce. Where is Andruw Jones on that list? Derek Jeter is one of the Top 10 shortstops in major league history.
