In the space of three hours, Phil Hughes’ future went from bleak to oblique. In the same amount of time, the Yankees’ position went from opaque to crystal clear.

For now, Hughes is out of the rotation. But nobody had to break the news to him or tell him that for now, things weren’t working out, that his presumably stellar future was being put on hold.
