49ers draft

Hey everyone, I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread where you can list players you would like to see the Niners draft in three weeks. After you post them I will look up scouting reports on them and give you a quick synopsis of what they do well and what they don’t plus where they may be drafted. If you want to look them up yourself, that’s fine but if you don’t want to them I would be more than happy to look them up for you.

tell me about Jerrod Mayo, LB

I see his name go across the mock ticker on various channels. I'm wondering what would make the 49ers go LB again in the 1st round. I think they have more pressing needs (OL, WR) but if this Mayo kid is a "can't miss" then maybe it's worth it. some youtube clips would be nice too! -bB

possibilities

Looks like Quentin Groves will be the best athlete available when it's time for the Niners to draft. He seems like a very nice DE for the NFL. Very fast. Seems like he's the consensus guy the Niners need, even their most glaring need to me is QB and WR.

Jerod Mayo

Okay the skinny on him is he is a major sleeper. The kid has all sorts of potential and is skyrocketing up draft boards. Originally he was a mid rounder but now he is late first to early second rounder so that should give you idea of how high teams are on this kid. The issue with him is whether he is a Inside or Outside Linebacker Linebacker because he is good at both those positions but not spectacular. Here is a link that gives a scouting report on him, ignore where they project him getting drafted because it is incorrect. http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/ilb/jerodmayo.html And here is a link on youtube of some highlights of him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3Y9hEndYgo As far as the Niners drafting it could happen because he is becoming a popular pick at linebacker. However I think Groves would be a better pick here because he is a hybrid who could play end or outside linebacker which is ideal for a 3-4. WR will be addressed in later rounds because there is so much depth. -SCNorcal

The Niners need a WR. Arnaz

The Niners need a WR. Arnaz Battle, Isaac Bruce, and Jason Hill are not going to cut it for a team looking to make a respectable run towards the playoffs. Groves would be a good pick but then all the pressure would be on Martz to do something he hasn't done before, structure the offense around a TE (Vernon Davis) and a RB rather than his usual dual WR and versatile RB offensive combination. Albeit, Vernon and Frank have a lot of potential to formulate a potent possesion oriented offense but this team needs a WR in the draft within the first 3 rounds. On another note, I don't mind the Niners trading of their first round pick for Joe Staley which is a move that has been pretty controversial. Staley looks to be a mainstay on the line and it's pretty obvious by now how hard it is to find good linemen in the NFL.

49ers Should go WR

If DeSean Jackson isn't there at their pick.....Mario Manningham or Andre Caldwell would be sufficient for the Niners to spend their first round draft pick on. If they have an early 2nd round pick, I can see them going after Brian Brohm of Chad Henne to give Alex Smith some competition.

In response to the guy above

In response to the guy above me...you don't think Shaun Hill is enough competition for Alex Smith as is? It's pretty much an open competition between the two already, why add another variable when you have other problems? DeSean Jackson should be the pick. I'd even go so far as to say we need to trade up in the first round if he won't fall.

no need for another QB

if it's not going to be Smith then it'll be Hill. it's a year too early to start drafting at QB again. personally, I'd like to see UC Davis alum JT O'Sullivan (3rd string) get the nod. in any event, I don't think Martz needs a big name QB to be successful. he simply needs someone that's smart. Look at Warner, Bulger, and Kitna. None of them were high draftees. I have a feeling Smith might is going to "get it" this year...-bB

Smith will “get it” if

Smith will "get it" if the system calls for him to make passes exclusively under 15 yards, doesn't neglect the run game, and utilizes the TE or RB as a safety valve. Smith is good in the short game but can't throw deep to save his life, which is why our ridiculously strong TE should be running post routes across the middle rather than streaks up the side.

Quentin Groves

I've been hearing on ESPN today that Groves had heart surgery. That sounds serious enough to me. anyone know more - sounds like it could affect his ability to play.

Groves condition

It sounds like from what I've read that it shouldn't affect his stock drastically because some teams still have them high on their draft boards. The surgery was for a fast heartbeat but it seems it shouldn't affect him too drastically. On another note, I saw a mock draft on ESPN that has Limas Sweed dropping to the Niners. I have no basis for my belief but I think there is a solid chance that he falls to us with the lingering issues with his wrist. What does everyone else think?

Sweed

In one word, no. Even as a longhorns fan, Sweed looks like a surefire failure at the next level. He's not a physical WR and not all that quick or fast. He's tall though so he'll get drafted early.
