50 million reasons to jump ship
If European teams are able to lure mid-level talent overseas right now then I think it’s a big possibility that one of these Euro teams ponies up the 50mil price tag and snags Kobe, Lebron, etc.
It’d be unreal media attention for them. ESPN would have to dedicate people to simply hang out in Europe and follow our stars year round. The whole media landscape would change if this went down.
Think about how other countries follow their stars in our pro leagues? I don’t think we ever imagined this situation being vice-versa but it’s definitely a reality now.

would they go for 1 year, 50 mil?
if that's the case then I think a team would do it. or at least part of me wouldn't mind it seeing it happen. -bBAugust 13, 2008 - 12:48am

re:
LeBron wanted a multi year deal with opt out options each year. There's no question this would bring unprecedented media coverage, but just LeBron on a European team doesn't make them an amazing team. I'd assume team success would be brought into the equation, and seeing as LeBron would be the entire payroll, I doubt they'd be very successful.August 13, 2008 - 10:49pm

y'all are talking fantasy
I don't want to be dismissive, but guys like Bron and Kobe aren't leaving the NBA until their prime is well past. These guys are loaded (endorsements make more than contracts) and absolutely do not need contract money. Unless one of them picks up a thieving manager/gambling problem/tiger obsession a la Mike Tyson, they don't need the 50mil. My point is this: superstars of the NBA are playing against the past as much as the present. They want the championship and the legacy. Bron and Kobe aren't going to waste good NBA years making money they don't need whilst tarnishing their comparability to Jordan, Dr. J et al.Reply

If a Euro team can muster $50 mill per for a multi-year deal, by all means, sign LeBron. Seeing as their payrolls are at about $50 mill right now, I doubt that happens.
