At what point do you just walk the guy?

Manny Ramirez is hitting .475 with an .850 SLG% since coming over to the Dodgers on August 1. In those ten games, he has thirteen RBIs (including two last night in a win over PHI) and four homeruns. He has scored nine runs. Behind him, Joe Torre is going with James Loney, who is hitting .324 since the trade (though without much power).

With three more games coming up in the series, should PHI (or teams later in season) walk Ramirez and pitch to James Loney or whomever is behind Manny? Looking at their lineup, LA has one elite hitter and about six pretty good ones. Why not take the chance? I’m not advocating anything Bonds-esque here (circa 2005), but the situations are similiar. Cole Hamels starts tonight for Philly. He’s a stud with little fear and good stuff, but if I’m Charlie Manuel, he’s pitching well around Manny. Same with Blanton on Wednesday.

I would feel the same way about Adam Dunn in Arizona, but Manny’s average is about eighty points higher.

re:

The Dodgers one real threat in their lineup is Manny. They have decent hitting, but besides Manny they don't have much consistency or power. If I was the opposing team. I would walk Manny in any and all RBI opportunities. However, that could just lead to a terrible backlash where the rest of the Dodgers pick up their game because they finally have somebody on base to drive home.

Manny has made the Dodgers so much better, that was a great trade for them.

fool me once...

Manuel intentionally walked Manny twice in the two games since I started this thread... he scored both times. As Vin Scully said, "The best laid plans of mice and men..." The Dodgers, after an embarassing series in San Francisco, are stepping it up. If they sweep the Phils tomorrow, they'll have a little breathing room with Milwaukee coming to town. I love that the Brew crew is so far reversing last year's slide. CC and Manny have been the two best trades of the season.

re:

The Manny trade was the epitome of filling a need. How often do we see a team who has a glaring hole get some mediocre player to fill their need? The Dodgers had a massive hole in the power hitting department, and they filled it. Hopefully they can keep Manny around though.
