spring training success/failure

During spring training, many fans dismiss game results as not indicative of what will happen during the actual season. Managers experiment with a number of different players, many of whom will never make it to the active roster. So, in many ways, the teams that face each other in spring training look nothing like the ones who will meet during the actual season. It is hard to project a season’s outlook for many veteran pitchers or offensive production for position players because they often experiment with different hitting/pitching strategies/ changed mechanics while the games don’t count. However, particularly for rookies and young players, spring training is a critical time for them to show their respective team their potential, and take advantage of more opportunities to adjust to major league ball. Are you concerned with how your team fares in spring training? Do you think that spring results are more indicative of a season outlook for pitchers or batters? Veterans or rookies? Is there anything that worries you regarding your team based on what has happened thus far in spring training?

Probably More For Rookies

For injured players and rookies Spring Training is a good indicator of who will be producing once the regular season starts. Veterans are usually hit or miss depending on unforseen injuries and past consistency perfomances or underperformances.

Agreed

If Beckett struggles during s.t. I'm not that concerned...trying new pitches and things, ok, I buy that. If Manny's not catapulting them out of the park, I'm more relieved than anything bc I don't want him to pull another freaking oblique muscle or wear himself out or whatever else Manny does. Save it, please. It's a long season. But meanwhile, our young prophet Clay Buchholz can't get out of the 4th inning and occupies an ERA approaching 10. Everyone's been so gung-ho on the Boston rotation, but minus Schilling, there's not a ton of depth. Suddenly everyone's like, "oh wait, we did only see him pitch like two games last year" and before you know it, he's down in Pawtucket and we've got Bartolo Colon as our #5...

its a good preview of September

much of the buzz in spring training is around the young talent that's showcasing themselves before they go back to triple A. then we'll see these people back on the scene throughout the year (especially sept call-ups) and they'll become instant stars. Jacoby Ellsbury would fit into this category, so would Phil Hughes etc. This year it'll be someone else. Who do you think it'll be? -bB
