Barbaro and now Eight Belles it’s an issue for sure. Not intentional like Mike Vick pimping dog fights, but brings awareness of the stress the sport puts on these animals.
i’m no longer a fan of horse racing i’ll admit i’ve been to the track a few times before and watched the bigger events. however, this recent tragedy is only a snippet of the problems that run across horse racing. steroids, overworking the horses, developing them when they’re too young, etc. the Eight Belles story is simply a culmination of all these events and happens more often than we think. -bB
Interesting… I read an article in the Times yesterday, where Rhoden pointed out that we make such a big deal about steroids being “rampant” in baseball (and if that’s true, then what are they in horse racing…a commonplace. A prerequisite. An expectation), but we are fine with juicing up these animals and that doesn’t pose a moral dilemna for us at all.
if that’s the case how hypocritical we are. Rules apply to humans but we can put harmful substances in our animals. I shudder to think of the things we’re putting in our bodies that have steroids and other chemicals in them.
