Football takes an extreme amount of aggression to be successful and has no history of gentlemanly behavior like Rugby, for example. (Soccer is a gentleman’s game played by hooligans. Rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen.) These guys are taught to hate the opponent in order to play better. So hate is an essential part of their job. That affects people, I think.

I don’t think its hate. I don’t think its hate. These guys love pushing the limits. They are the best athletes in the world, and they need to do something to feel alive. They sacrafice their bodies to entertain us, so they also sacrafice themselves to entertain themselves. Plus a lot of football players grew up with nothing, so they sometimes get a little to into having everything and push the limits.
